How we calculated this

We picked the most common "growth tier" plan for each competitor - the plan most teams actually end up on, not the cheapest tier that's missing half the features. All prices use annual billing rates from each vendor's public pricing page.

AI costs are calculated as your monthly conversations multiplied by the AI resolution percentage you set. Competitors that charge per-resolution (Intercom at $0.99, Zendesk at $1.50, HelpScout at $0.75) will see their costs scale with volume. Tools with flat AI pricing (Crisp at $25/mo, LiveChat ChatBot at $52/mo, Tawk.to at $29/mo) stay constant regardless of usage.

Phone support and knowledge base costs only apply to competitors that charge extra for those features. "Included" means the feature comes with the base plan. "Not available" means the competitor doesn't offer it at all.

We use publicly listed pricing from each competitor's website as of early 2025. We pick the most common growth-tier plan for each tool since that's what most teams actually end up on. Your actual bill may vary based on custom deals, annual vs monthly billing, or usage-based overages.
Intercom: Advanced ($85/seat). Zendesk: Suite Growth ($89/agent). Crisp: Unlimited or Enterprise depending on team size. HelpScout: Plus ($75/user). LiveChat: Team plan plus HelpDesk add-on. Tawk.to: Free core with AI and branding add-ons. These are the tiers most growing teams land on - not the cheapest plan that lacks features, and not the enterprise tier you probably don't need yet.
An AI resolution is when the AI chatbot successfully handles a customer question without a human agent needing to step in. We calculate AI resolutions as your monthly conversations multiplied by the AI resolution percentage you set with the slider. The cost per resolution varies by competitor - Intercom charges $0.99 each, Zendesk $1.50, and HelpScout $0.75.
Most chat-first support tools (Crisp, HelpScout, LiveChat, Tawk.to) don't offer built-in phone support at all. Intercom offers it as a paid add-on ($80/month). Only Zendesk includes phone (Zendesk Talk) in their Suite plans. If phone support is critical for your team, that narrows the field significantly.
